Deserved League Champions!

Abercarn overcame a dogged Crumlin team to become winners of League Three East B with four games still to be played. There were many tired bodies in the Abercarn team following their tough encounter against Beaufort mid week outscoring the hosts by three tries to one. Jack Davies was first to cross the whitewash before the referee awarded a penalty try. Chris Rogers finished off an excellent break by Gareth Williams and Josh Steer kicked two conversions to take the final score to 19 points to 5.

Crumlin were immediately on the scoreboard when Abercarn were penalised from the kick-off. They moved further ahead when a kick was charged down in their own half and they won the chase to the try line and the conversion gave them a ten points lead after only twelve minutes. The visitors, containing many new faces from their usual team, were pushing Abercarn hard and the game became a battle between the forwards with few opportunities for the three-quarters. The home side finally got on the scoreboard when number eight Gareth Peebles touched down as the pack drove over the line and Josh Steer added the two points.

The second half started in the same fashion as the first when Abercarn were penalised from the start and Crumlin moved six points ahead. Neither side were able to take a stranglehold on the game and it became a stop start affair, with lots of stoppages and the visitors called for uncontested scrums in the final quarter. Abercarn's second try came when they stole the ball at a defensive line-out and Aaron Davies crashed over the line. With time running out Abercarn were pounding the Crumlin line and the referee ran out of patience with the defenders and awarded a penalty try which was converted by Jason Evans and Abercarn were in the lead for the first time in the match, Crumlin hit back immediately with their third penalty of the game but stout defending held them at bay and to the relief of players and supporters alike the final whistle went to give Abercarn a narrow win of 19 points to 16. The four league points meant that they could not be overtaken

Back at the clubhouse, Chairman Andrew Chetland handed the Man of the Match award to Aaron Davies and then challenged the team to be the first win a league undefeated! This Wednesday they travel to Rogerstone before enjoying a seven day break, playing Bettws the following Wednesday.
