Typical derby encounter

Abercarn remain unbeaten in the league following a hard fought win over Crumlin. Lock Matthew Brittan led out the team in recognition of him playing his 200th game for the club. As expected from a local derby Abercarn were made to work hard for their win with Crumlin putting up stubborn resistance throughout the game. They were first on the scoreboard when Abercarn were penalised for offside and added another three points when the offence was soon repeated. Number eight Gareth Peebles collected a kick inside his own half and gave a lovely flat pass to full-back Jason Evans who weaved his way through the entire Crumlin side to score a scintillating try which was duly converted by Owen Glastonbury. Aber's pack was in fine form and after a period of pressure Matthew Brittan crossed the line and Chips added the two points. Abercarn continued to infringe which enabled Crumlin to keep in touch and at half-time Abercarn held a slender lead of 14 points to 12.

The visitors pack had the edge over their hosts and after a number attacking scrums were awarded a penalty try and Peebs scored his 7th try of the season when the pack drove over the line to get the deserved bonus point. Abercarn continued to hemorrhage penalties and Crumlin showed excellent spirit and continued to play to the very end. The game was put beyond their reach when hooker Aaron Davies ran down the touchline and slid over the line and the final score was 31 points to 18.

Unfortunately winger Gareth Williams had to leave the pitch with a broken jaw and the club sends its best wishes for a swift recovery. Back at the clubhouse many votes went to Doggsie but he was just beaten by Britax.

This Saturday Abercarn travel to play Cefn Coed in the SWALEC Cup and no doubt the coaches will be speaking to the players about their discipline giving away so many penalties.
