A comfortable win in the cup.

Abercarn travelled to Knighton in Mid Wales to play Tref-Y-Clawdd in the second round of the SWALEC Cup and cruised to a comfortable 33 points to 7 win. The team had a simple game plan - to overpower the home side in the first quarter and build a good lead and this they did in some style. The hosts defended bravely but could not stop the unrelenting wave of attacks once the Abercarn pack established control. All the visitors points were scored in the first twenty minutes of the game. First on the scoreboard was Jamie Iggo, normally a flanker but playing on the wing, who grabbed a brace of tries before back rower Ben Blakemore scored a hat-trick. Outside half Gethin Patterson was successful with four out of the five conversions.

Initially it looked like there could be a cricket score but as Abercarn took their foot off the gas the home side came back into the game. The remainder of the match was a scrappy affair with both sides missing out on several scoring chances. With five minutes remaining on the clock the hosts deservedly got their score when they intercepted a pass and ran under the posts.

Back at their clubhouse, The Horse and Jockey, the Abercarn side were well looked after by their hosts. The births of children to both Team Manager Jack Davies and scrum-half Karl Kinsey was acknowledged in typical rugby fashion and they bravely wore their nappies for the rest of the night. Hooker Aaron Davies was nominated as Man of the Match for his impressive form with many typical bullocking runs.

The journey back was interrupted for a short stop-over in Abergavenny for much needed hydration and continued team building. The Club wants to thank the many supporters who travelled the two hour journey to Knighton for their support.

This Saturday we return to League action with a visit to Tredegar Ironsides.
